Zoonotic Diseases (Conditions Transmissible to Humans)

Ringworm in a child.

Not really a worm, but rather a fungal infection of the skin, this mild skin disease can be acquired from apparently healthy kittens or adult cats without any lesions of their own. Normal contact and a reduced immunity on the part of the individual person can allow this skin infection to show itself in some individuals in a household, while not showing itself in other family members with stronger immunity. It is easily treated with either topical and/or oral medication as prescribed by a physician. Suspected carrier cats should be screened for the disease, and if indicated, treated prophylactically as well. Please contact us if you have any concerns about your cat or family members.

Cat Scratch Disease (Bartonella) in an Adult

Cat Scratch Disease (CSD) is a disease in humans transmitted through the scratch of an infected cat. It can take many shapes and forms, but may start out as lesions similar to the ones seen here at the right. These lesions can be intensly itchy and do not respond to topical medication. In addition to the sking lesions, the organism that caused CSD, Bartonella, can be found in many other tissues, especially in the lymph nodes. People infected with Bartonella ofter get painfully enlarged lymphnodes which may drain pus. If you or a loved one have any of these signs, be sure to contact your physician immediately. Fortunately, CSD is readily treatable with today's antibiotics.

Cat's acquire the bacterium that causes CSD from fleas. Therefore, to protect not only your pets, but your family as well, be sure to have your cat tested for Bartonella and protect all your pets with effective and safe flea control products which we maintain in our pharmacy.
